Pundit impressed by 'game-changing' new plan after analysing controversial Man United footage

The new proposed FIFA offside rule is set to create more goals next season and prevent situations similar to the controversial Man United goal against Man City in the Premier League last season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Aston Villa defender Alan Hutton has claimed that the defenders will suffer from the new rule, but attackers will benefit.

FIFA are set to begin trialling a new offside rule ahead of the 2023/24 season in the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden which would see football endure a major change.

The new rule would mean that the entire player of an attacking player would have to be in front of the defender to be ruled offside, something that would see the amount of offside calls made be significantly reduced.

Last season, after a controversial Manchester derby which saw a Bruno Fernandes goal stand for Man United despite teammate Marcus Rashford being offside in the build up there was a call for clarity, and the new rule introduced could prevent situations such as these.

Following the change to the offside rules, Hutton believes football matches will feature more goals.

“It’s a game-changer, there will definitely be more goals within the game, no doubt about that,” he told Football Insider.

“ I mean obviously this favours with the attacker, they get maybe that yard on a defender and as a defender, especially if you were a centre half, it will be very difficult, as you’re going to have to hold such a high line.

“But, I do get it, there’s such a grey area at times and when VAR was introduced with offside rules, we were talking about the width of the hair.

“it will be much easier to differentiate between onside and offside now, and a correct decision will be made.”

“There will certainly be more goals and more excitement.”
