Sources: Bournemouth close to sacking Andoni Iraola

Andoni Iraola must lead Bournemouth to victory over Burnley on Saturday (28 October) or he will be sacked, sources have told Football Insider.

The Cherries are still winless in the Premier League this season after nine games.

Speaking after his side’s 2-1 loss against Wolves on Saturday (21 October) and quoted by the BBC, Iraola insisted he is not concerned about his job but rather “concerned about Bournemouth winning games”.

He also confirmed he has not spoken to the board about his position.

Bournemouth are owned by Las Vegas-based businessman Bill Foley, and well-placed sources have told Football Insider that he has “huge, ambitious plans” for the club and is “not happy” with their start to the 2023-24 campaign.

Burnley are next on the agenda for Iraola and the Cherries, with Vincent Kompany’s side enduring a similarly tough start to the new season.

The Lancashire outfit have picked up just four points so far this term and share the relegation zone with Bournemouth and Sheffield United.

But on the horizon for Iraola are much tougher tests, including consecutive games against Liverpool, Man City and Newcastle in the next month.

The Spaniard was appointed at the Vitality Stadium after the surprise sacking of Gary O’Neil during the summer. He got the job after rejecting an offer to take over at Leeds in the closing months of last season.

O’Neil was dismissed by Foley despite keeping the Cherries in the Premier League – leading them to a 15th-place finish in their first season back in the top flight.

He returned to the south coast to haunt Bournemouth on Saturday as his new side Wolves came from behind to win at the Vitality Stadium.

The Cherries’ only points this season have come from draws against Chelsea, Brentford and West Ham.

Iraola has been successful in the League Cup, guiding his side to the fourth round following wins over Swansea and Stoke.
