Hutton drops 'enormous' Rangers claim after development today

Philippe Clement can overturn Celtic’s five-point lead on Rangers at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, former Gers defender Alan Hutton said the fate of this season’s league title will come down to “big moments” between the Glasgow rivals and it is about who can capitalise on the others’ misfortune.

Clement was victorious in his first game in charge with a 4-0 win over Hibernian at Ibrox last weekend and followed that up with a 2-1 win over Hearts on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Celtic had a rare blip on Saturday as they endured a goalless draw at Hibernian.

It means the Hoops end the weekend top of the table with 26 points, while Rangers now have 21 after narrowing the gap by two points.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the gap to Celtic (17 October), the new manager insisted the season is a marathon, not a sprint and urged his players to focus on themselves in order to get more points and play better football.

Hutton acknowledged that it won’t be easy but has backed the new look Rangers side to step up to the challenge.

I think it is going to come down to some big moments, and the weekend matches, what happened with Rangers today and with Celtic dropping points have been absolutely huge”, he told Football Insider.

You look at when Michael Beale took over it was a similar gap and there was a moment at Ibrox where they were 2-1 up and Kyogo [Furuhashi] scored to make it 2-2. I think that was a huge turning point within the season and I think it will probably happen again.

Both teams don’t tend to drop an enormous amount of points so it will come down to big situations like that. If they can get a hold of that and capitalise on any sort of slip up of course it is possible.

There is still a long way to go so it can be done but I think Clement is trying to urge the team not to get ahead of themselves.

In other news, Clement plotting to lure stars to Rangers in January he knows well.
