Agbonlahor can't believe Chelsea could embark on Jan signing blizzard after Pochettino reveal

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Chelsea must “forget about January” and focus on finding the right balance with their current squad.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the Blues no longer have the assets to generate funds for any more spending.

Chelsea spent a reported £400million in the summer window but sit 11th in the Premier League after winning three of their opening eight Premier League games this term.

As quoted by the London Evening Standard (29 September), Mauricio Pochettino has confirmed that he wants to be “more involved” in the Blues’ transfer activity and has begun identifying January targets.

Chelsea have strung together back-to-back wins in the Premier League, with summer signings Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer on the scoresheet in a 4-1 win over Burnley on Saturday (7 October).

The London outfit have been widely linked with several potential targets, including wantaway Brentford striker Ivan Toney, ahead of the January window.

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I look at this squad of players and I think they’ll get top four, if they’re lucky.

“They don’t look like league contenders, even after spending a billion pounds.

“I think it has to be a minimum expectation of getting back into the Champions League, and maybe they do need help in the transfer market to do that.

“But who do you sell to generate the funds? When does it come to a stage where they stop spending all this money.

“I think they need to forget about the January window, and focus on finding the best eleven and keep picking up wins.

“They’ve been very good in the last two weeks, and that has to continue after the break.”
