Agbonlahor tips Newcastle United to sign Joachim Andersen in January - 'I rate him highly'

Gabby Agbonlahor has insisted Crystal Palace defender Joachim Andersen would be a “great signing” for Newcastle – but warned they may have to pay over the odds.

The former Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, suggested he could be “priced out of a move” by the London club in January.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (1 October) that Newcastle are closely monitoring Crystal Palace star Andersen ahead of the January transfer window.

The Magpies have held a long-term interest in the Denmark international and submitted a late summer bid that was rejected by Palace.

Andersen has played every minute for Roy Hodgson’s side this season, scoring twice – and also impressed in the 2022-23 campaign.

The defender, who joined Palace from Lyon for a reported £17million, is under contract at Selhurst Park until June 2026.

Newcastle’s interest comes with Sven Botman on the treatment table due to a knee injury, meaning Jamaal Lascelles came into the side which beat Burnley on Saturday (30 September).

Agbonlahor told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I don’t see why Palace would want to sell him, especially in January.

“Him and Guehi have got a great partnership, so it’s going to cost Newcastle a lot of money.

“If they’re willing to pay a lot of money, then it’s a great signing. I rate him highly.

“But maybe Crystal Palace will price him out of a move. It’ll be difficult to replace him in the middle of the season.”
