Revealed: Ex-Liverpool chief Michael Edwards' response to Man United offer revealed- sources

Former Liverpool recruitment chief Michael Edwards has no plans to return to sporting director roles as Man United step up their interest when the first stage of their takeover is complete, sources have told Football Insider.

The United board is set to ratify Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s purchase of a 25 per cent stake in the club, for up to £1.3 billion, at a meeting on Thursday.

While the future role of the Glazers has yet to be confirmed, part of the proposed agreement is for Ratcliffe and his team to take charge of the football side of the club immediately.

That could mean significant changes in sporting personnel with the position of John Murtough, the director of football, thought to be among those who will be under scrutiny.

It remains to be seen if such changes can be made before the next transfer window, given that it will take around eight weeks for the share deal, in which Ineos take over the football side of the business, to be completed.

But Edwards is a target for the new Man United regime, as is Paul Mitchell, the former Tottenham transfer chief who is sporting director at Monaco and has experience across a number of European clubs.

However, Edwards has already gone down a different route in his career since his departure from Liverpool in the summer of 2022.

Following a year-long break from the game he launched a consultancy company in September called Ludonautics, working for multiple clubs and ownership groups.

That does not preclude him from taking a permanent employment role but Edwards’ stance is that he is not looking to return to a sporting director position at a major club.

He has been offered multiple recruitment roles, including by Chelsea and previously by Man United, since his exit from Liverpool at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Edwards is heralded by Liverpool fans for playing a key role as the club ended their three-decade title search and also won their sixth European cup.
