Kieran Maguire reveals why FSG are willing to snub Liverpool bid

FSG are happy to sacrifice Anfield’s Euro 2028 bid as Liverpool will earn more money from their stadium expansion.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who spoke exclusively to Football Insider about the decision to snub Anfield as a Euro 2028 venue.

The 10 venues that will host matches for the 2028 European Championships were announced last week, with Anfield left out of the list.

Liverpool’s home ground joined Old Trafford in the group of stadiums that will not host any matches in the tournament.

Instead, Everton’s newly-constructed Bramley Moore Dock stadium will represent Merseyside.

As reported by the Daily Mail, Anfield was ruled out as a host venue because the dimensions of the pitch were considered too small.

Maguire insists FSG would rather focus on completing the new expansion to the Anfield Road stand as that will provide more money for the club in the long term.

I think FSG, to a certain extent. will feel it’s a price worth paying,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

It looks as though Uefa have told Liverpool that Anfield cannot be used in Euro 2028 because of the size of the pitch.

Effectively, the stands have encroached as part of the expansion.

So FSG, who are incredibly forensic in terms of their analysis of everything financial, will have worked out that extra seats and the income that will generate is more on a week-by-week basis.

It more than compensates for any loss of hosting matches in the upcoming European Championships.
