Kieran Maguire: Michael Beale exit could help Rangers land jackpot

Rangers are set to pocket millions if they are able to qualify from their Europa League group stage this season.

That is the view of finance expert Kieran Maguire, who exclusively told Football Insider that Michael Beale’s sacking at Ibrox would be justified if the Scottish giants reach the knockout phases in Europe.

Beale was sacked by Rangers earlier this month following a poor start to the season.

The Glasgow side sit seven points behind arch-rivals Celtic in the league, while they have also made a modest start to their Europa League campaign.

Whoever steps in to replace Beale at Ibrox will be tasked with catching up to Celtic domestically, but perhaps more importantly, turning around their fate in Europe.

Maguire explained that Rangers will earn around £2million per matchday in Europe, with additional prize money arriving from Uefa and their coefficient payments.

If they do turn it around and stay in Europe, we know how financially beneficial that could be for them,” Maguire told Football Insider’s Sean Fisher.

The figures they can generate from the Europa League are significant.

Having 50,000 people turn up at Ibrox for a home match in the Europa League is easily worth £2million per match – that tallies up if they reach the knockout phases.

Then you’ve got the additional fees coming through from UEFA.

And on top of that, it has an impact on your overall coefficient.

So that will have been taken into consideration by the Rangers board when they were making this decision.

They won’t have given up on winning the league this season, but given what we’ve seen in recent years, it’s already looking like a very challenging ambition.
