Sources: Standard Liege hijack Isaac Hayden deal in dramatic Newcastle United twist

Standard Liege have hijacked Sheffield Wednesday’s move for Newcastle United star Isaac Hayden, sources have told Football Insider.

The midfielder, 28, is now set to join the Belgian club following another remarkable U-turn.

Hayden had first undergone a Luton Town medical on Monday after agreeing a deal before that collapsed and had agreed to join Wednesday earlier on deadline day while travelling to the club for medical tests.

But that deal also appears to have fallen through with Hayden now headed to Liege.

Sheffield Wednesday are set to complete a move for one Newcastle midfielder however, with Jeff Hendrick travelling to the club for a medical in the last hours.

Football Insider revealed on Friday (1 September) that Hayden will join Wednesday on loan – his third spell away from St James’ Park in three seasons.

Hayden has been deemed surplus to requirements at St James’ Park with the midfielder not having been given a spot in Eddie Howe’s plans and being forced to train away from the first-team squad.

He spent last season out on loan with Norwich City but made only 14 appearances in the Championship with injuries hampering his time at Carrow Road.

The midfielder has racked up 171 total appearances for the Magpies, including 118 outings in the Premier League.

Arsenal youth product Hayden has been at Newcastle since 2016 and is under contract on Tyneside until June 2026 after penning a long-term deal before the club’s mega-money takeover.

Standard Liege are one of Belgium’s most successful clubs but have not won a trophy since 2018.

The club will also not feature in European competition this season.
