EXCLUSIVE: Rangers set sights on Graham Potter after approach made

Rangers have not given up hope of luring Graham Potter as they set their sights on an A-list manager who has can develop players and build a winning team, sources have told Football Insider.

The former Chelsea and Brighton boss, 48, is the top target for the Ibrox giants as they explore potential replacements for Michael Beale.

Rangers announced on Sunday night they have dismissed Beale after just 10 months in charge, following Saturday’s defeat to Aberdeen.

It appeared to come out of the blue from the Ibrox board but that is not the case. Football Insider exclusively revealed on 8th September that Rangers had made an approach to Potter in the wake of a calamitous week that ended in Old Firm defeat to Celtic.

However, Potter is biding his time before returning to management after offers from a number of clubs since his Chelsea sacking in April.

He held talks over the Lyon job before pulling out and snubbed offers from Southampton and Leicester City during the summer.

Potter and his advisers believe his CV merits a job at an elite club who are in the Champions League or capable of reaching that level.

Rangers are prepared to be patient in their pursuit of a manager who can improve a team, that bar the remarkable Europa League run under Giovanni van Bronckhorst, has been treading water since Aston Villa poached Steven Gerrard in November 2021.

Steven Davis, who was a talisman of the team under Gerrard in his second spell at the club, has been placed in interim charge, with Rangers hinting it could prove to be a fairly lengthy spell.

He will be assisted by current club coaches Steven Smith and Brian Gilmour, former player Alex Rae and goalkeeping coach Colin Stewart.

Potter burnished his reputation at Brighton and was headhunted by Chelsea before taking over in September last year, replacing Thomas Tuchel at the helm.

The 48-year-old was in charge of the team for just under seven months before he was sacked and replaced by interim Frank Lampard.
